Fire - A century of the Volunteer Fire Brigade - Jo Livingston
A history of the years when firefighting depended on local altruism, covering the period from 1820 up to World War 2. During this period training for firemen was introduced and new technology was gradually developed, though this was mainly in urban areas. The talk uses photographs and other items from Jo's family history - four generations of volunteer firemen. Jo will bring a fireman's helmet to pass round, as well as an early 19th century fire bucket.
