Smoke, Steam and Soot - David Burnell
1863 saw the opening of the world’s first underground railway in London. This light hearted talk explores through contemporary accounts and illustrations, why the line came to be built, how it was built, and what was said about it at the time. We also look at the experiences of those who were brave enough to venture ‘into the foul subsoil, merely to reach their destination, rather than board a bus’, (The Times). The talk is fully illustrated and is presented by David Burnell, an Underground anorak, a volunteer guide at the London Transport Museum and the deviser of an award winning tour of the architecture on some classic Underground stations.
