The group meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month to visit parks, rivers and reserves local to Orpington or farther afield, to look out for birds and other fauna. We have a gentle walk and try to finish with a welcome cup of coffee.
Generally we meet at the venue at 10 a.m. or 9.30 a.m. at Orpington Station if we are travelling by train.
In January we agreed our programme for 2020 and in February had our first outing to the River Cray at St Mary Cray. It was cold, the river was running fast and the birds were defending their territories.
March 25th we will visit Kelsey Park, Beckenham to view the heronry and other water fowl. We will meet at Orpington station just after 9.30 a.m. to take the direct train to Beckenham Junction.
April 22nd we make our annual visit to the Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve. Bradbourne Vale, TN13 3DH, meeting in the Reserve car park at 10 a.m.
May 27th we will visit Footscray Meadows, Sidcup, meeting in the Rectory Road car park. DA14 4QN at 10a.m.
June 24th we will go to Leybourne Lakes Country Park, Larkfield, ME 20 6 AA, which is accessed off the A228 and M20.
July 22nd we will have an all day visit to Rye Harbour, East Sussex. TN13 7 TX for bird watching on the Reserve and fish and chips!
August 26th we will visit Keston Ponds and Heath, meeting at 10 a.m. in the main car park near Caesar’s Well.
September 23rd we shall visit either the Barnes Wetland Centre by train or drive to the RSPB Rainham Marshes Reserve in Essex.
October 28th we will return to Oare Marshes, Faversham, ME 13 0QA to watch the migrating birds and seals.
November 25th we will go by train to St James Park to see the wide variety of overwintering birds, particularly the pelican.
There is no outing in December. Each outing is led by a current member. We welcome new members who have an interest in birdwatching and meeting others with the same interest. Please contact me if you would like to join the group.
